Use It Before You Lose It: Review Your Dental Benefits Before 2026 Ends

Have dental insurance? Before the year ends, take a moment to check whether you have unused benefits. If you’re due for a dental exam, cleaning, or recommended treatment, your remaining coverage may help with the cost.

At MAP Dental Center, we encourage patients to understand their benefits and plan ahead. Start by confirming your plan’s reset date—December 31 isn’t the deadline for every policy.

When do your dental benefits reset?

Many dental insurance plans follow a calendar year and renew on January 1. Others use a different benefit period. Unused annual benefits often don’t carry over, although some policies have rollover provisions.

Check your policy documents or contact your insurer to confirm your deadline before scheduling around it. The American Dental Association’s guide to using dental benefits explains why checking your own plan matters.

What coverage do you have left?

Your insurer’s website, mobile app, or customer service team can help you review:

  • Your remaining annual maximum: How much your plan may still pay toward covered services.
  • Your deductible: Whether you’ve already met it for the current benefit year.
  • Pending claims: Recent treatment that may reduce your available benefits.
  • Service limits: Restrictions on how often a procedure is covered.
  • Network requirements: Whether your dentist participates in your specific plan.

If you’ve already met your deductible, completing recommended care before it resets may affect your costs. Your remaining maximum, coinsurance, and policy terms still apply. See the ADA’s explanation of dental plan terms for more detail.

Which appointments should you consider?

Begin with care you’re due for or treatment your dentist has already recommended. This might include an exam, cleaning, necessary X-rays, a filling, or a crown.

Preventive services often receive favorable coverage, but frequency limits and eligibility vary. Having unused benefits doesn’t automatically mean another cleaning or a particular procedure will be covered. The National Association of Dental Plans describes how coverage differs across plan types.

Your dental needs should guide your treatment plan. Don’t postpone urgent care while waiting for benefits to renew.

Ask these questions before treatment

A little preparation can make the financial side of your visit clearer. Before committing to treatment, ask:

  1. Is this dentist in-network for my exact plan?
  2. Is the recommended procedure covered?
  3. What is my estimated out-of-pocket cost?
  4. Does my deductible apply?
  5. Is preauthorization or a pretreatment estimate needed?
  6. Which date determines the benefit year for this procedure?

Request a written estimate and remember that final payment depends on your insurer’s claim review.

Can treatment be scheduled across two benefit years?

Sometimes a dentist can safely schedule separate stages of treatment across different benefit periods. Whether this helps with costs depends on the treatment, your plan’s rules, and your coverage in each year.

Ask your dentist whether that timing is clinically appropriate and confirm how your insurer assigns benefits. Splitting appointments across December and January does not guarantee additional coverage.

Check your FSA deadline

If you have a Flexible Spending Account, review its spending deadline and any carryover or grace-period provisions. Eligible dental expenses may qualify for reimbursement.

HSA funds do not expire at year-end. They remain in your account until you use them, so there’s no need to rush treatment simply to spend an HSA balance. Review IRS Publication 969 and confirm your account’s rules.
